So I have now manually deleted all of my photos and videos in Google Drive and will have to wait 24 hours to see if it wipes them from my Google Photos as well. After doing some Googling, I found an old article saying that you could go to settings in Google Photos and untick 'sync Google Photos with Google Drive'. I contacted Google support online and the guy had no idea what my problem even was. This never happened with the Backup & Sync app.

Then when I went into Google Drive through my web browser, I saw that all of my photos had been loaded into Google Drive. When I looked at the Google Storage utilization data, it showed me that I had 125GB of data. This didn't make sense because my total photo and video collection in Google Photos was 88GB. Suddenly, my 100GB annual plan was not enough. After I went through the wizard, it told me I was short of storage. This week, my Google Backup & Sync client was upgraded to the new Google Drive client.
